Unique Labor Day Celebrations Around Michigan!
Labor Day is a holiday that signals the end of summer and the beginning for fall. For many, it is the last hurrah before school begins full force and all of the fall activities take over the calendars. It is a weekend of fun and unique activities all over the state! So no matter where you are traveling, you’ll find something to do, even if it’s just walking a quaint downtown, sitting by a campfire, or taking one last dip in the lake-all things unique to Michigan! Check out these other unique events as you are making plans to celebrate the last summer holiday.
Walk the Mighty Mac
This has to be one of the most unique things you can do on Labor Day! Every year, the Mackinaw Bridge is closed down for a number of hours in the morning for pedestrians to walk from one end to the other. This is the only time you can do this, and thousands gather to walk the 5 miles between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City-even the governor and politicians show up! You can choose from different lengths and walks to find one that works well for you and your schedule.
Michigan State Fair
The Michigan State Fair in Novi, happens every year over Labor Day Weekend! It was the first state fair in the country when it started in 1849. Since 2013, it has been run by a non-profit organization rather than the state government. As with any fair, there are tons of fun activities from carnival rides, exhibitions, monster trucks and more. (If you go up to walk the Mac, check out the Chippewa Fair in Kinross about an hour east of the bridge!)
Zeeland Holland Truck Parade
Labor Day is all about celebrating our labor force-specifically blue collar workers. So what better way to celebrate than to go watch some big rigs thunder through Zeeland and Holland! Parade starts at MillerKnoll in Zeeland and ends at the Holland Civic Center, where festivities continue with truck tours, a free ice cream social, and tons of other activities. Bring your ear protection, because those horns are loud! Parade starts at 9:15am and festivities conclude at 11:30am. so you have tons of time to hit up the beach!
Michigan Renaissance Fair
Lords and Ladies! Knights and Knaves! Spend your day in Holly, MI for a thrilling time of jousting, magic shows, ale and mead, and so much more! Dress in your best medieval or fantasy outfit and immerse yourself in a different world for a day.
Walk the Bridge and See the Musical Fountains in Grand Haven
Don’t want to drive up to the Mackinaw Bridge? Well, run over to Grand Haven and participate in their bridge walk! After the shore walk across the Harbor Dr. bridge, spend the day at the beach or downtown hanging out. Once the sun goes down, have a seat in the Lynne Sherwood Stadium for the unique Musical Fountains Show! The Musical Fountains show in Grand Haven has been around since 1963.
