5 Tips When Shopping for a Dog-Friendly Home
When looking for a new home, don’t forget to think about your pet! After all, they are moving with you. Most people who have a dog are already thinking items that will make their home more dog-friendly. After working with dozens of clients who are dog owners, these are the 5 most common items we see on wish lists and in discussions when looking for a home.
- Outdoor space. This is probably the biggest item people look for! Dogs need space to burn off energy and run around. Some breeds need more space than others. Know your breed so you know what you need in outdoor space. Don’t forget about fencing either. Fencing can be expensive. If you want a fenced in yard, make it a priority on your wish list so we can help you find it! Another possibility is finding a nearby dog park or even in HOAs there could be dog parks if the home you like doesn’t have a good backyard. If you are an active person, this could be a good option for you as well. Assessing your lifestyle and your dog’s personality will help greatly in finding the best place for both of you!
- Flooring. All dogs shed. Some way more so than others. Flooring and home maintenance can be a high priority. Maybe a low pile carpet and a Roomba are your style, or you prefer hard floors so you can sweep. If you are looking at hard floors, it’s a good idea to find something that your pet’s claws won’t scratch so you don’t need to replace it in a few years or before moving in.
- HOA. If you are looking to live in a certain subdivision, familiarize yourself with the HOA’s rules. Some have specific rules regarding breeds, yards, and other things that may impact your decision.
- Atmosphere. If your dog has high anxiety or other personality traits that could be aggravated by high traffic or a lot of activity, looking to live in a busy area is probably not the best idea. We can help create a search that will fit your dog’s personality needs too!
- Layout. Does your dog sleep in your room? Do you have an aging dog? Looking for a house where your bedroom is on the main floor will make access easier for your dog if they are older or as they age. If you want a specific space for your dog in the house as well, let’s be sure to add it to your wish list!
There are many other things to think about when moving with pet. Some want to be close to a doggy daycare, their groomer, or other dog amenities. Some want acres of land and to be in the country. When shopping for a home for you and your dog, it is key to find a home that fits both of your lifestyles. If you are looking to work with an agent that understands you and your pet’s needs, we would love to work with you to help you find the perfect home!
